Melbourne paint correction

Paint Correction in Melbourne

Swirl removal, machine polish, and clear-coat restoration. All work in our Cranbourne North studio.

What it is

Long-haul gloss, properly restored

Paint correction is the multi-stage machine polishing process that removes the swirl marks, holograms, water spots and light scratches that build up in clear coat over time. Done right, it brings back the depth and gloss that washing alone can't restore.

Most cars in Melbourne pick up a layer of micro-defects within the first two or three years. Sponge washes, automatic brush washes, dust on a dry car wiped with a microfibre, the wrong drying technique - all of it leaves marks. They're invisible in overcast light. In direct sun they show up as a haze and a spider-web pattern across the bonnet, roof and boot lid.

We run three tiers of correction. A single-stage Paint Enhancement removes the light stuff. A full Paint Correction tackles deeper swirls and holograms. Correction & Coating bundles the correction with a multi-year ceramic so the freshly corrected paint gets locked in. Right tier depends on the car and the condition.

All correction work happens at our Cranbourne North studio. Machine polishing needs controlled lighting to see defects properly, which is why this isn't a service we do mobile. The studio is within a 20-minute drive of Berwick, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Clyde North, Pakenham, Beaconsfield, Officer and Frankston.

The detail

What paint correction actually does

Correction isn't a wax or a one-pass polish. It's a controlled removal of damaged clear coat to reveal flat, defect-free paint underneath. Four specific outcomes.

Removes swirl marks

Years of incorrect washing (drive-through brushes, dry rags, paper towels) leave fine circular scratches in the clear coat. Correction levels them out.

Restores depth and clarity

Once the micro-scratches are gone, light bounces back cleanly. The colour underneath looks darker, the metallic flake pops, the gloss is back.

Preps for ceramic coating

Coating locks in whatever is on the paint at the time of application. Correction is what gets the paint right before that lock-in happens.

True cut and polish

Two-stage cut and polish removes deeper defects then refines the finish, rather than glazing over the damage with fillers.

Who it suits

Cars that earn back the correction spend

Paint correction pays off most on these ownership patterns.

Daily-driven swirled paint

Cars three years and older with visible swirl marks in direct sun. Correction returns the finish closer to factory than you'd think possible.

Pre-coating prep

About to apply ceramic? Correction comes first. The coating bonds to whatever is on the paint, so you want that surface defect-free.

Resale prep

A corrected finish reads as 'looked after' on a test drive and supports the asking price. Especially true above $30k.

Dark-coloured cars

Black, dark blue, deep red. Swirls show worst on dark paint and correction has the most visible impact.

Performance and prestige

Cars where the paint is part of the appeal. European metallic finishes, sports cars driven hard, classic restorations.

Post-repaint correction

Paint just back from panel beaters? Even good shops leave fine machine marks. A correction pass refines that finish before you take delivery.

After the service

After the correction

Correction restores the finish. How you wash it from here decides how long the result lasts.

First week

  • Avoid the first automatic brush wash for the rest of the car's life.
  • Light hand wash only for the first week.
  • If you've also coated, follow the ceramic cure guidance.
  • Park indoors or covered where possible while the sealant cures.

Ongoing maintenance

  • Two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo. Twice a month is plenty.
  • No automatic brush washes. They are the leading cause of new swirls.
  • Microfibre drying towel, not paper or hose-dry.
  • Yearly check-in detail keeps the finish where we left it.

FAQs

Paint Correction - FAQs

What is paint correction?

It's a controlled machine-led process that removes a thin layer of damaged clear coat to reveal a flat, defect-free surface underneath. Done right, it brings back the depth and gloss that washing alone can't restore.

Do I need full correction or just enhancement?

Most daily drivers with swirl marks and dull paint do well with Paint Enhancement. Cars with deeper scratches, holograms from a prior bad polish, or paint that's been neglected for years need full Paint Correction. We assess and quote after seeing the car.

How long does correction take?

Paint Enhancement is typically a single day. Full Paint Correction is one to two days. Correction & Coating runs one to two days depending on size and condition. We confirm timelines when we quote.

Will correction damage the clear coat?

No, when it's done correctly with the right pads, compounds and machine technique. We measure paint thickness on jobs that require deeper correction so we stay well within safe tolerance.

Will the swirls come back?

Not if you wash the car correctly. The leading cause of new swirls is automatic brush washes and dry-wiping with the wrong cloth. Two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo is the rule.

Should I correct before applying ceramic?

Yes. Ceramic coating locks in whatever is on the paint at the time of application, including swirl marks. Correction gets the surface right before the coating goes down.

Are you mobile? Can you come to me?

No. Paint correction requires controlled studio lighting to see defects properly during the work. All correction is carried out at our Cranbourne North studio. We do offer mobile headlight restoration as a separate add-on.

How much does paint correction cost in Melbourne?

From $300 for Paint Enhancement, from $400 for full Paint Correction, from $1,000 for Correction & Coating with multi-year ceramic. Final pricing depends on vehicle size and current paint condition, quoted after we see the car.
